Monday 22nd May- In House Climpson's Coffee Champs
Tuesday 23rd May- Wholesale Customer Climpson's Coffee Champs
Well, what a week! Monday saw us host our in house Climpson’s Coffee Champs at Climpson’s Arch, and Tuesday was the turn for our Wholesale Customers.
Our wholesale competition was broken down into 4 sections; an opening latte art battle, an order challenge, dialling in an espresso and a final blind cupping.
For those reading who work in coffee and have never entered a coffee contest, it may seem like these are standard tasks to the hard working barista, and should be a walk in the park. There’s something about the moment you step behind the machine, and realise that everyone’s watching you. The moment of terror when you’re hand gets the shakes and your perfectly crafted heart becomes an unflattering onion shaped mess. The constant side glances as your rival has just finished 3 of their coffees for the order challenge and you’re still weighing out a single shot espresso. The sweats that follow the sound of everyone else slamming their cupping spoons down confidently and you’re franticly trying to taste the different between three cupping bowls of the same coffee from different roast dates.
The rules were simple; the first two stages were a knock out, with points awarded to the winners. The following ‘dialing espresso’ round was point based and decided on the top 3 competitors who then moved through to the final blind cupping battle round. Making it through to the final round we had Robert from Wired Co. with Joe and Phillip from Timberyard. A great effort was put in by the guys but it was Robert from Wired Co. who took the crown and was announced as the 2016 Climpson Coffee Champ!
On the Monday, the Climpson’s family gathered to decide who would be crowned the Climpson’s Coffee Champion. Some highlights from the evening were the eagerly anticipated grudge match of our two top roasters, Simon Clark and Anthony Piper. Although all of the names were pulled from a hat, Simon and Anthony have faced off two years running. In the grudge match of the decade, Simon ultimately defeated Anthony. Florian Cross, our logistics coordinator, managed to get 0 out of 5 on the triangulation challenge, which he definitely cared a lot more about than anyone else.
Following all of the caffeinated fun, we had our winners. Manuel Borsato came in 1st, lifting a giant trophy. Followed in second by Ylva Zacharoff, with Henrik Moller claiming third place.
It’s been a week full of banter, fun, coffee and laughs and we want to say a massive thank you to everyone who entered and came to watch and especially Tim Ridley and Dan Harvey for being our guest judges!
