UK Roasting Champs
Glasgow Coffee Festival
17 October 2015
This year was the first ever UK Roasters Champs of which our Head Roaster and Head of Quality Control both entered. Simon and Anthony represented Climpson's and made it to the top 8. Proud of you guys.
Here is what Anthony has to say about his experience.
My first attempt at any coffee competition was the UK roasting champs held in Glasgow this year. I ended up coming 8th which isn't as good as it sounds as there was only 8 spots, I finished dead last. This might sound disappointing which it was at the time but I came away with a lot and a new and outlook on roasting and coffee competitions.
There was only 5% between the overall winner and myself and a few silly mistakes on my behalf may have meant all the difference. I was too focused on solubility on the refractometer and forgot that the simplest way to check if a roast is fully developed is to use weight loss ratio. My roasts for the competition had a weight loss ratio of only 9-10% where we always normally aim for at least 12% on even our lightest roasts, It might not seem like much but it's that time that can turn a something from super acidic and boarding on sour to delightfully sweet and juicy. It didn't even cross my mind at the time and now I am left to ponder this mistake until I get another shot at it.
I can't wait for another chance to compete though the competition was great and there was a strong comradery between all the contestants. All happy to share idea's and thoughts, which I think sums up our industry at the moment everyone is wanting to get better and happy to share their knowledge if you just ask.
Massive thanks goes to the gals and guys at Dear Green and Nexus for having us, it's been great to be part of the first UKRC and hopefully the next competition I make the top 10 – and it’s not by default.
