UK COFFEE WEEK brings the UK’s coffee lovers together to raise funds for Project Waterfall and improve access to safe water to people in coffee growing communities.
We kicked things off early - you may have already seen our #givingitup for Lent campaign in the cafe. Can’t give up sugar in your coffee? Well Project Waterfall will hopefully benefit. Your lack of willpower and your small change will go a long way for Project Waterfalls goal of raising £100,000 to provide safe water to over 8000 people in the remote community of Mbulu in Tanzania.
Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa, home to over 45 million people - almost half of the people do not have access to safe water. Typically, women and children spend over two hours a day collecting water, and up to seven hours in remote areas. Access to toilets is even lower – at just a 12% of the population. These issues have a big impact on health, with over 10,000 children under five dying each year from preventable diarrhoeal diseases. There are wider impacts too – on education, livelihoods and wellbeing.
The Mbulu District is extremely remote and only accessible by plane and an eight hour drive. Consequently they have found installing a water system a challenge both logistically and financially. Put simply without Project Waterfall and Water Aid, it would be unlikely their 8,000 population would have clean water.
Where the money goes:
To complete the project a further 12km of pipeline needs to be constructed to ensure access for the entire community, and then fence it off to guarantee water purity. The community need to be trained to ensure the longevity of the project.
£8 could pay for one bag of cement to help construct a pipeline
£12 could pay for two taps for a village water point
£50 could pay for a technician to train a village pump attendant for 3 days on pump maintenance
