The Story

The Uraga washing station processes the coffee of local smallholders growing at close to 2,000 metres. With more than 400 farmers harvesting very small areas, the washing station provides the infrastructure to select, separate and control all post-harvest processing. The greater collective input increases the production volume and quality, also leading to better prices for the community.

With the recent liberalisation of the Ethiopian coffee market, the Guji zone and sub-region of Uraga has emerged as one of the most consistently interesting and expressive areas of production. The local heirloom varieties, Dega and Wolisho, are descendant from the surrounding forests and the washed processing here is precisely controlled for intensity and clarity of flavour. The impressive altitude contributes to a slow and even drying process, a key factor in the Guji reputation for consistency and longevity.

Our ambition is to continue sourcing, roasting and crafting the finest coffees from the heart of East London.
