Rwanda is blessed with ideal coffee growing conditions that include high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soils with good organic structure and an abundance of Bourbon. The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders of which there are thought to be around half a million with parcels of land often not much larger than just one hectare per family. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country, with particularly large concentrations along the beautiful Lake Kivu and in the southern province. It is here, on the shores of Lake Kivu, where the Kilimbi washing station is located, purchasing coffee from 150 families within the area. Kilimbi focuses on giving back to the small holders, paying almost 40% more per kilo of coffee than the local and domestic market price. As Rwandan coffee growers own only a small portion of land, aside from coffee they also grow maize, plantain and other vegetables that are either consumed or sold into the local market. Recently Kilimbi also gifted 2 hectares of land to the local communities around the washing stations to grow new food crops and give back to the small holders and community.
This washed coffee from the Kilimbi washing station is a mellow, yet highly complex coffee with a a slightly heavy and ‘jammy’ mouthfeel. Perfect as a filter brewed coffee to highlight the sweet peach and rhubarb notes.
