Farm Story

Since joining the Café Orgánico Marcala (COMSA) cooperative the Peñalba family have seen the potential and quality of their coffee improve each year. Coffee is grown under the shade of fruit and pine trees and provides sanctuary for a colourful array of birds. Farm owner Gilma Lily Peñalba is also a local primary school teacher and uses the coffee harvest to bring her family closer to their natural environment.

The Details

Starting in 2001 with 69 local producers COMSA set out to improve the communities coffee and livelihoods through sustainable organic production. Now they represent over 1,200 members and provide training in organic farm regeneration, water management and wildlife conservation. The improved quality and prices continue to motivate producing families and act as a beacon of inspiration as to the long-term sustainability of organic specialty practices.
