Each year, the start of summer is marked by the arrival of fresh crop Kenyan coffees. Renowned for their sweetness and superbly consistent beans, the country has a long and proud history of successful and innovative coffee cultivation. This stems from a combination of altitude, rich soils and climate that results in the high quality that Kenyan coffee is synonymous with around the world.
The Thunguri is named after a major wet mill, located on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya in the Kirinyaga District. Associated with the Kibirigwi Co Operative, it hosts a total of 1025 active small-hold farmers who deliver coffee each year to be fully washed, processed and sun dried. Before pulping, all the cherries are hand selected and graded to ensure consistent quality and taste. Each farmer has roughly half an acre of coffee producing land, with only around 270 trees, allowing for much greater attention to detail in rearing and caring for each plant.
This is not the first time we have featured Thunguri and we're really excited to be able to offer it again in 2017. The coffee is perfect in particular for filter brewing options to really accentuate the sweet notes of plum and pomegranate in the cup.
Push for a higher extraction on this juicy Kenyan by using a larger 1:17.5 ratio for filter. You'll find all the gummy sweetness you'd expect from a Kenyan with fruity notes of Ribena for all you nostalgia lovers!
