The Story

In recent years we have closely followed the development of Asian coffees, evaluating numerous samples and providing feedback in a small effort to help import partners grow their supply chain. Having seen the quality of processing improve so dramatically we are excited to welcome back a coffee from the Yiwu washing station in Yunnan, China.

Keen followers of the Fields may remember last year's Yiwu lot, a crisp honey processed coffee. This year they have ventured further with their processing and sent us a vibrant natural coffee grown by a small group of farming families in the Guiben region of Yunnan province. Nearing the border with Laos, the farmers surrounding the Yiwu station hand pick and deliver cherries to be sorted and slowly dried on raised beds over 4 weeks. From here the coffee is moved to the Yunnan Coffee Traders mill in Pu’er city to be prepared for export. Traditionally this has been a tea-growing region with coffee offering a new option for more diverse and sustainable agricultural communities. In the adventurous spirit of The Fields we are excited to explore the possibilities of Asian coffee production that may become a key part of a more sustainable industry. With the resulting coffee offering a rich flavour combination of dark fruit and almond liqueur we are sure that these lesser-known regions will soon become notable mainstays.
