- Alice & Ben from RiSE Coffee Box

Founders Alice and Ben first launched RiSE coffee box because they believed that everyone should put down their Starbucks caramel lattes, throw away that instant coffee, and start drinking specialty coffee from a variety of independent roasters from all over the UK. Variety is the spice of life and with so many different origins, farming methods, and processing methods that affect the flavour profile, why confine yourself to the same coffee every time? The way that we choose our coffee selections for our multi roaster subscription is by blind tasting them alongside a dozen other roasters and selecting only those that are the highest quality. You can watch the process of cupping coffee on our YouTube here. We also love inviting our customers to blind taste and choose the coffees to feature in the box!

We have been long time admirers, followers and friends of Climpson & Sons coffee. Only a couple of coffee roasters have made it into the RiSE coffee box twice, and Climpson & Sons are one of them! We first featured their Ethiopian coffee called ‘Sasaba’ in July 2021 after sampling this delicious coffee from their iconic Broadway Market Cafe in East London.

Founded by Ian Burgess over 20 years ago, this pioneering coffee brand is now being spearheaded by Nicole Ferris also known as ‘The Pallet’ because of her excellent ability to taste coffee notes. Nicole has a true passion for coffee and sustainability and has mastered the art of cupping and identifying great coffee. All of the specialty coffee featured by Climpsons are delightful and they are all sourced responsibly through relationships they have built.

Climpsons featured in our Christmas 2022 edition of the box, with a collab coffee between the two of us. To choose the coffee, we co-hosted a cupping session in October and invited a number of our customers down to the Climpsons roastery to blind taste 5 different coffees that Nicole had selected. Our coffee club members unanimously agreed on an El Salvador single origin called ‘Las Ranas’. Las Ranas means frogs in Spanish, and this coffee comes from the Finca San Francisco area that has a forest reserve and lagoon that is home to thousands of frogs! At certain times of the year, the frogs are even found on the coffee farms. The name of this coffee is particularly memorable and our RiSE coffee box members often refer to it!

This pulped natural espresso based coffee is particularly complex and special. The coffee has a lovely sweetness coming from the honey with hints of raisin and fruit giving it a fruity sweetness. The almond flavour profile comes through helping to leave a strong buttery mouthful. It is well balanced with a slight tartness coming through towards the end. It is not too funky and weird, making it a great option for someone looking for a natural processed fruity coffee. We found this coffee super versatile. It worked perfectly as an espresso or French Press and we also enjoyed it in our Aeropress.

We had a huge amount of amazing feedback from our customers including:

Some seriously quality beans” - Matt T

“You can not get better than Climpsons Las Ranas’ - Nick C

We think our coffee club members did an incredible job, picking out a fantastic coffee to feature inside the RiSE coffee box, for everyone to enjoy. This coffee, currently isn’t available but keep an eye out on Climpsons page as it may feature again! Thanks so much to Nicole and the Climpson team for working with us, and producing such amazing speciality coffees from across the world.
