People. Planet. Processing.

We are excited to have coffee from the Musasa Dukunde Kawa cooperative again this year.

Natural coffees from Rwanda are a prized rarity and this version of The Fields marks the return of one of our favourite producers embracing this coveted style. Their tropical & fruit-forward coffees make this the perfect match for any adventurous espresso or filter brewer.

They manage four washing stations in the Gakenke District of Northern Rwanda with this coffee hailing from their first location, the Ruli washing station. Here they process the cherries from more than 1,000 local farmers growing Rwanda’s coveted Red Bourbon variety. Constructed at a vertiginous 1,999 metres above sea level, it is one of Rwanda’s highest washing stations.

As most of these farmers own less than a quarter of a hectare of land and around 250-300 trees each, working together as a cooperative allows for their harvest to be combined, processed and exported at significantly better prices.

The Ruli washing station is incredibly precise and takes pride in upholding these high processing standards. Cherries are hand-picked only when fully ripe and delivered for processing the same day. Most impressive of all is the traceability of each lot with it’s unique code following the coffee from date of harvest all the way to its export preparation in Kigali.

This precision is paying notable dividends for the farmers and the wider community. The Musasa cooperative is actively reinvesting this and now funds local education, medical care and transport - an impressive example of better quality coffee providing a better quality of life.
